Hatay Archeology Museum is in Antakya, riparian to the Asi River and near to the bridge. Some of the works which are exhibited in the museum removed by the digs which are done by Chicago oriental institute between the years of 1933-39. They are tell Cüdeyde, Tell Dahap, Çatal Höyük, Tell Tainat and Tel El Sheyik. Other works which are exhibited removed by Sir Leonard Wolley who digs to the name of British Museum.These works revealed from the Samandağ borough, in el mina zone in the years between 1937-1948. With the 2. World War , the digs were ended. The works which were found from digs have been stayed in depot until 1939. With the joining of hatay to Turkey, works arrangement are started. Arrangement of works lasted about 9 years. When it is finished, the museum is opened to visit in 1948. The building of museum was not enough so in 1969 a new extra building establishment was started and it was completed in 1973. The museum was again arranged and it was opened in 1974 with its new shape. Hatay Archeology Museum has more than 1.200 m2 mosaics and about 35.200 works.143.249 people visited museum in 2006. The 108.965 of them is native tourists, 34.284 of them is foreign visitors. Mosaics belong to the period of Greek, Rome , Byzantine. The mosaics which were used in the bases of churches and turkish baths and homes in Samandağ, Antakya, Harbiye are still exhibited as the form of panels. The subject of mosaics are mostly mythological. Therefore there are sculptures in the museum such as apollo sculpture which is 3 m, also Antakya Lahidin of Rome which was found in 2000 in Antakya dated 265-270 a.c.has different importance. There are 8 exbitions im the museum and the finds (coins,objets) are removed from the digs are also exhihited. The works of museum belong to the period of hittite, hellenistic, roman, byzantine and they were found in Antakya, Harbiye, İskenderun and Seleukia Pieria. The museum is the second in the world because of its mosaic collection.

The Saint Pierre Church

The Saint Pierre Church is on road of Antakya, Reyhanlı and it is 2 km to the city centre. The church become interesting to the visitors because of its damaged mosaics in pathces and the frescos on its walls. It was established in a cave where is at the slopes of Habib-i Neccar mountains, it is known as the first church of christianity. It was a natural cave but it was converted into the church with addings. St. Pierre, who is the one of the disciple of jesus .He came to Antakya in 29-40 a.c. and tried to spread of christianity. The first religios meeting of christianity was done here and the first time they took the name of christian. In the centuries of 12-13 a.c. this cave was converted to an gothic style church by the crusaders with the extra construction to the front of the cave..on the base of cave there were remnants of damaged mosaics which belongs to centuries of 4 .and 5. a.c..Therefore there were atlar, the small sculpture of st.pierre in the niche,holly water and a tunnel for running at the invasion time. The church was declared as worship the church was declared as worship place by the Pope VI. Paul every year on 29 June, a ceremony is prepared in here by the catholic church.


Haron is 20 m to the Saint Pierra Church. In here, there is an giant bust which was caved by rocks. This is an uncompleted relief human portrait. There is a blind on the bust. This relief was done by the antiochus, at the time of black death. This disaster caused to the many people death, a mask was caved and says were written on it to prevent this disaster.Today, this writtens are not present
