Motel One: Motel One

A very hip new hotel just outside the centre of Frankfurt that has good value rooms, and easy access to Frankfurt from the tram stop outside the front door. The location is an oasis of gentility in the industrial desert of Frankfurt's Ostend. A short walk in any direction and you will end up in some wasteland or underneath a dank factory.

But the spot where the hotel sits is popular with local office workers, and has some fantastic restaurants and cafes. I'd recommend some regular haunts of mine when I worked on Hanauer Landstrasse, like Stones for sandwiches and Das Leben ist schoen for pizzas. They also do great soup in the cafe of the "Blind Museum" opposite.

But like most of suburban Frankfurt it practically shuts down on weekends. You'll have problems finding somewhere to eat on a Sunday night, and the hotel doesn't do much more than snacks.

Address: Hanauer Landstraße 142

Comparison: about average

Directions: Take Tram 11 until you see the huge "Motel One" sign of the hotel. The tram stop is right outside the hotel.

Royal: Royal Eazires Royal City Hotel Review
Show Prices

A three star hotel in the heart of one of Europe's most important cities in a beautiful and relaxed neighbourhood for less than 40 euros? You'd think it was impossible, but Frankfurt's hotels are currently extremely good value, and the centrally located Royal must be one of the best value in the city. It's located just on the opposite banks of the river, a bridge crossing from the city center, in possibly Frankfurt's most exclusive suburb of Sachsenhausen. It's right by the museum strip, and is run by incredibly friendly and helpful staff who all spoke fluent English.

The Royal is conveniently close to Frankfurt's southern station (Frankfurt Süd). This station takes many trains, including ICEs from the airport, and is much more pleasant than the main hauptbahnhof in the center. From Frankfurt Süd you can walk through the leafy Sachsenhausen suburbs, up Bruckenstrasse, through the small park, and then take a right onto Wallstrasse, where the hotel is just there on your right.

The hotel also has Wireless LAN access. Although it isn't free it's still better value than that rip-off T-Online access you get in many German hotels. It cost 3 euros an hour, but they gave me a discount for booking a 3 hour block for just 7 euros.
