One of the most outstanding attractions on Santa Monica's ocean front is the pier, which as well as providing touristic entertainment, also lights up beautifully at night. The pier has appeared in many a movie, including the Titanic, Forrest Gump, They Shoot Horses Don't They?, the Sting, and a recent favourite of mine, Thank You for Not Smoking. It's actually a combination of two piers, one a sewer pipe carrier built in 1909, and later a wider pier built in 1913 that brought the ocean side entertainment. It was almost destroyed in the 1960s, only for its destruction order to be rescinded in 1973, just in time for its appearance in The Sting.

A fine place to shop, eat, stroll, or just sit and watch the fascinating characters who exist here. Tanned supermodels; chinese businessmen practicing Tai-Chi; leather clad bikers sharing a joint; a Mexican guitarist playing for a dancing child; street artists; breakdancers and assorted crazies.

icunme Mon Sep 7, 2009 20:32 UTC Interesting observations - SM has always been a haven for the homeless - Venice Beach will always be a culture shock. I do miss good Mexican food! | mwamwa Mon Jun 1, 2009 18:02 UTC advertised as Ocean View ,you leaned on window you could see the ocean. partial ocean view. 3 calls before a tooth brush (about 1 hour). The walls not insulated . We almost checked out at 2:00 AM too noisey. | Gillybob Fri Nov 2, 2007 10:56 UTC I really enjoyed the very short visit to Santa Monica we managed to fit into our trip to LA - I hope to return some day. Gillybob greetings | Bwana_Brown Mon Sep 17, 2007 23:20 UTC An enjoyable and well-written page on an Englishman's insights into the California 'scene' - quite funny too! Nice to see how the rich and famous live. I wasn't so reticent, having dipped my feet in Frisco in '79 while enroute to Papua New Guinea! |
