The Doubletree Hotel is top notch. Great service and facilities, free wi-fi Internet, and huge apartments, with a big lounge, bedroom, en suite bathroom, and two TVs. The downside was the location, a little far back from the beach and the main action, and the views, which were of the Santa Monica freeway. The apartments were huge, though, and so was the hotel. The central area of the hotel was completely open, with glass lifts and balconies to view the magnificence.

If I thought my hotel was nice, I was in for a shock when I saw where our publisher collegues were staying. Up to $500 a night to stay here, and you'll not see much change from $300 for the least expensive rooms. When I first walked into the place, I stepped into a room and saw a red Ferrari. I thought the car was part of the decor, it was that kind of hotel, only later I discovered it was the hotel's pristine resident's garage. Downstairs is a stylish foyer, complete with llama skin rugs and piranha skeleton wall decorations. Upstairs is a grand piano bar, with fantastic views over the city and ocean. I can't comment on its quality, but my colleagues from the publishers absolutely loved it.

icunme Mon Sep 7, 2009 20:32 UTC Interesting observations - SM has always been a haven for the homeless - Venice Beach will always be a culture shock. I do miss good Mexican food! | mwamwa Mon Jun 1, 2009 18:02 UTC advertised as Ocean View ,you leaned on window you could see the ocean. partial ocean view. 3 calls before a tooth brush (about 1 hour). The walls not insulated . We almost checked out at 2:00 AM too noisey. | Gillybob Fri Nov 2, 2007 10:56 UTC I really enjoyed the very short visit to Santa Monica we managed to fit into our trip to LA - I hope to return some day. Gillybob greetings | Bwana_Brown Mon Sep 17, 2007 23:20 UTC An enjoyable and well-written page on an Englishman's insights into the California 'scene' - quite funny too! Nice to see how the rich and famous live. I wasn't so reticent, having dipped my feet in Frisco in '79 while enroute to Papua New Guinea! |
