Garmisch-Partenkirche

Munich sits at the foot of the Alps, and it is tempting for anyone visiting to make a side trip into these famous mountains. A great base for seeing the German Alps, from Germany's highest mountain the Zugspitze, to wandering through Alpine meadows and gorges, is the Olympic town of Garmisch-Partenkirche, just an hour and a half south of Munich on the regional line to Innsbruck.

Bamberg

I've yet to meet anyone who has visited Bamberg and failed to be impressed. It is an amazing medieval German town, with some outstanding sights, architecture and picture postcard views. It's only a small town, a little north of Nuremberg on the same ICE line, but it packs as much into its tiny space as any area of bigger, more famous, cities, maybe even more than the city it was modelled on: the seven hills of Rome.

Nuremberg

Less than 2 hours from Munich, north on the superfast ICE line, is the wonderful Franconian city of Nuremberg. Officially part of Bavaria, but traditionally part of Franconia, the mythical medieval city offers a different flavour of Germany, but with all the relaxed prosperity you normally associate with Bavaria. The city is beautiful, relaxed, compact and filled with wonders and surprises. It's my local city, and easily one of my favourites in all of Germany.

Day Trips

There are a number of great day trips possible from Munich, if for some reason you run out of things to do in the city itself. Within easy reach of the city by train or car are some fabulous destinations, including Mozart's Salzburg in Austria (1h30), the Alpine resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen (1h30), the Danubian fog hole of medieval Regensburg (1h30), and the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein (2h).
