I don't know if its an issue of lack of public toilets, but I don't think I've ever seen as many people urinating in public as I did in Skopje. Only Budapest with its large homeless population comes close. It was isolated mostly to the areas around the Stone Bridge and the Kale, but some of those places I wished I had a peg for my nose the stench was so bad. Inside the Kale fortress, one mother was helping her kid use the toilet, that is the wall of the Kale itself. Bizarrely, she was standing right next to a portaloo!

Apart from that, the city was actually pretty clean.

Taxis Taxi Scams Review

The taxis drivers seemed to be pretty decent, like elsewhere in the country, but I heard that the taxi drivers that wait for people at the airport will seriously overcharge you. But that warning came from the Lonely Planet guide, which despite its usually high standards, wasn't exactly reliable for any of my trips in the Balkans.

Some of the run down, claustrophobic streets on the north side made me feel a bit edgy, but in general the city felt safe to walk around at all times of the day or night, especially in the streets near Makedonija Square. I only saw one beggar, and there was no hassle from anyone of any kind.
