Binz is the most easily reached resort on the entire island, being at the end of several major train lines running from Berlin and Cologne. This makes it very popular with Germans, and it has masses of hotels all along the sea front and behind. Binz doesn't have much in the way of outstanding sights, just a long beach, a simple Seebruecke (pier) and some interesting regional architecture. In the winter it is extremely cold, as I can testify, but still has plenty of visitors to enjoy walks along the Strand in the bracing sea breeze.

A few kilometers along the coast from Binz is less accessible resort of Sellin. There are no trains to Sellin, except for the little Rasunder Roland steam service, so getting there can be problematic unless you have a car. It has quite a different feel to it than Binz, with wide boulevards, and a small private cove, rather than a long sweeping beach. It also has on its sea front one of the most striking pieces of architecture in Germany, one that is known to many Germans, the Sellin Seebruecke

The authentic and historic narrow guage railway of the Rasender Roland (Racing Roland) is a must see for any steam enthusiast. While I am not a great fan of steam trains myself, the magic of the Rasunder Roland is hard to deny. As you are pulled along in acrid old coaches, you can watch out of the window as the steam hatches over the fields and floats away, or escapes through the dense trees of the forest like spirits startled by the noisy monster ploughing through the empty countryside.
