  • This hotel is conveniently located only for its proximity to the main Westbahnhof station. It's a long way from town, but it is close to the U-Bahn station, so with a ticket you can be in the center in a few minutes. It's comfortable and clean, but nothing special. You don't get a great deal for the price, but for Vienna it is almost acceptable. The best thing about the hotel is the views from the upper floors, and if you can get one of these rooms I'd say they are just about worth the price. Every morning and night I was treated to a different sunset and sunrise, one clear and sunny, one rainy and overcast, and several with varying layers of snow and ice. From my vantage point on the 10th floor, I could see all the way to the city center and the cathedral, and beyond.

In addition to the 67-71 euros a night cost, everything else in the hotel was expensive too. There was no mini-bar, but you could buy snacks and drinks in numerous automatic dispensors on several floors. There was also a restaurant and a convenient 24-hour snack bar. I prefered to make use of the nearby supermarkets, restaurants and shops on the nearby Marienhilfstrasse, which is possibly Vienna's biggest shopping street. In addition they offer Wi-Fi internet access, but it is the expensive rip-off T-Mobile service. Again I relented on my "never again" promise and paid up, only to again be ripped off by constant downtime.

I suspect there are better hotels in Vienna, and the next time I visit I will try and find one, but the Ibis is certainly not one I would try and avoid in future, and I can recommend it just for the view.

Unique Qualities: Great city views from the upper floors.

  • This is a no frills hotel that is extremely good value for Vienna. For 44 euros we got a huge room with two twin beds, en suite bathroom and free internet access for the laptop (cable provided by hotel if you ask). Breakfast was also good value at just 5 euros extra.

For 44 euros you can't expect a great deal. The place was very clean, but there were marks on all the walls like people had been running on them in big plastic boots. The shower door was loose and leaked, and the view was onto a roof and fire exit.

But the most important things were spot on: quite central, near a underground station, friendly staff, low cost, big room, clean and free internet. I don't need anything else.
