That's what they say. Copenhagen, if you are lucky, will give you grey skies in December. If you are unlucky you will get freezing rain sand blasted into your face by storm force winds. Typically it's grey, windy and rainy. The sun rises after 8am and disappears behind the horizon before 4pm. Not that you can see it, behind the thick banks of cloud.

That's what they say. And to be honest, my start to Copenhagen got off to an unlucky start. The storm blew in from the North Sea. It was so fierce it tore down houses on the coast of Denmark and southern Sweden. I landed at Kastrup in the middle of this. The plane bucked from side to side, and there was a constant jolt of roller coaster weightlessness. Out of the window the turbines in the Øresund Sound were churning as fast as the rotor blades on a helicopter.

That's what the say. But when the night passed, the swirling winds and belts of frozen rain washed the city clean. We awoke to a shining golden sun and blue skies. We walked the fresh, clean, windswept streets of Copenhagen enjoying a unusual winter phenomenon: a window in the winter clouds that circulate over the North Sea every year, day after day.

So come to Copenhagen in the winter: The sun does shine sometimes, the streets are less crowded with tourists, and the prices lower. You'll experience a city much more like the locals who have to live with this weather their whole lives and learned to deal with it. And Copenhagen, even when it rains, is still a beautiful and amazing city. So don't worry and come rain or shine.
