Two Gentlemen of Verona | Verona, from the Torre dei Lamberti |
Verona has to be one of the most romantic cities in the world, so much so that it can make you feel either uncomfortable or amorous if you arrive alone, depending on your inclination. The romantic air comes from the city's prominent position in the history of romantic stories, being the setting for possibly the most famous love story of all time: Romeo and Juliet. There's no evidence that Shakespeare ever visited the city, so the air is almost as much as sham as Juliet's balcony, but when it comes to matters of love only belief is needed, so who cares for the truth, when Verona is such a wonderful city. |

| | Apart from its fictional history, Verona has plenty of real history too. In addition to Juliet's balcony, which is little more than a tourist trap, the city has an imposing Roman amphitheater, smack in the middle of the central Piazza Bra, some fine bridges spanning the winding River Adige, a number of excellent churches, and a grand old castle on the hill with wonderful views over the red roofs of the old centre's houses. Best of all is just to wander the city's streets and soak up the atmosphere, which is very easy to do given its small size. |
