Nimes is probably most famous for its Roman history, and it has several very well preserved and stunning Roman sites, some right bang in the city center, like the impressive amphitheatre, and some just a short journey outside, like the unmistakeable Pont du Gard. However, surrounding this Roman wonders is a fine city in its own right. Nimes is a pleasant city to walk around, and apart from the Roman tourist attractions, it has a lovely old town center, and the delightful Jardins de la Fontaine, an 18th century park fed by graceful waterways on the northern edge of the city.
This city has to be one of France's premier attractions.
Things I Loved
The Amphitheater, the Pont du Gard and the excellent youth hostel.
Disappointments
Nothing in particular. The city is one of my favourites. |

We found it very pleasant also, but could not get into the arena because it was closed for some bicycle event. | ettenaj Sun May 28, 2006 23:25 UTC Recently got back from the Dordogne and it was great Nimes is now on my wish list | davidtahd Tue May 2, 2006 02:05 UTC Thank you for your photos and positive comments about Nimes, France. Thanks for the great tips. If it's not that far by train from Paris this is a great daytrip. I'm also impressed with your photos-really nice. Thanks. |
