In a cellar on Steinweg, through a pair of red curtains is possibly Coburg's best watering hole. The Loom Bar has a fairly young crowd, and serves a selection of very good beers and cocktails, as well as some tasty bar snacks. The service is very friendly, and the music always some variety of ambient techno or electronica, think Mouse on Mars, and Kruder and Dorfmeister. The best thing about the place is that it feels so damn comfortable, and is great for a chat after a long day at work, or as a primer for a long night at the Calaruso upstairs and next door.

    Calaruso: Loud "latino" Disco

If you want to dance to pounding techno and drink over-priced beer until the early hours, then this is the place to be in Coburg. I think it is supposed to be some kind of latino disco, but the music is mostly full-blooded pumping euro-techno. It varies depending on the DJ, but you can usually expect it to be loud enough to give you tinnitus. The staff and the customers are relaxed and friendly, and there are plenty of comfy seats in dark corners to chill-out in, if you don't want to dance. It's difficult, but not impossible, to engage in conversation because of the volume, so if you aren't dancing, your mostly going to be people watching.

    Beer Garden: Outdoor Summer Drinking

  • Nightlife Spot: Beer Garden

On a small plateau in the shade of the trees near the town square and palace is the beer garden. It's only open during good weather, for obvious reasons, but it is very enjoyable to sit and drink beer with the locals on a warm summer evening, when the place gets quite busy. Beer is about two euros a half-liter, but you have to pay a deposit on the glass of a couple of euros too, so that you don't walk off with it. You buy the beer from the little kiosk, sit on the benches, and use the toilets by the Coburger bank.

Directions: Opposite the Coburger bank. From the cinema, walk out of the main doors, and through the narrow passageway opposite, and take a left up the hill. You will see people drinking in the beer garden off a street to the right.

Paddy's Irish Bar: Irish Bar with no Irish People

  • Nightlife Spot: Paddy's Irish Bar

I'm not sure why all these Irish bars crop up where no Irish people will ever likely stroll by, but at least this one was set up by an Irishman, apparently, although they left and the place was taken over by the current, German, incumbant. The place itself looks nothing like any Irish pub I've ever been to, but it does have plenty of Irish paraphenalia to let you know exactly what kind of theme bar it is. There's a handful of Irish beer on draft, including the ubiquitous Guiness, served ice cold in a half-pint glass, but also Kilkenny and others. There's often live music on, and it gets quite busy on those nights, but you may even get an impromptu sing-a-long session from the resident guitarist, even if there isn't any band scheduled.

Overall it's a pleasant and relaxing bar, with pretty good Irish beer if you really want a change from the excellent German beer on offer elsewhere. The only downside is probably the awful British 80s music playing, but you can hardly hear it.

    Wooloomooloo Bar: Deep Underground Club

  • Nightlife Spot: Wooloomooloo Bar

This is one of the best places to drink in Coburg. The music is very good, the crowd is relaxed, the decor is unusual, and the beer is cheap. It's also free to get in. There are three slightly cramped floors that go so far under the ground that you'd probably be safe from a direct nuclear strike. In fact you might not even notice it. The first floor itself is below street level, but then it goes down, and down again. The top floor has a long and busy bar, the second floor has lots of seats and a giant projection screen with off-beat films playing, and the third floor is a small dance floor. It's a great bar, and the only downside is, apart from being a bit cramped, is that the ventilation doesn't seem all that great, so it gets a bit hot and smoky in the lower levels.

The place is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9pm until the early hours of the morning.

This is actually in nearby Zapfendorf, but well worth the trip if you can find a driver. See the entry under Zapfendorf for more information.

It's changed a bit since Ray (arctriton) last went, and the new owners have given it an all new style of their own. Inside it is very classy, with relaxed colours and comfy chairs. The sound system isn't much, but the DJ was great when I was there. Even though I didn't like everything he played, he was very good at his job, and didn't just play euro-rap and R&B all night like a lot of DJs in Coburg. Inside the club Russian is as common a tongue as German, and outside at 3am there are gangs of staggeringly drunk Russian teenagers. The atmosphere is generally friendly, and while the gangs of youths can be intimidating if you are sober, I've not had a single problem with them despite walking past them every weekend on the way home.
