Vegetarian Eating in Coburg

  • It's difficult for vegetarians in Germany anyway, but particularly so in Coburg where hardly anyone speaks English. However, there are a surprising number of places that cater for vegetarians in Coburg, and a number of other restaurants where you can at least get by, if you know what to order. If you look at my list of restaurants, you will get a good idea of where you can eat as a vegetarian in Coburg, but also see some other recommended restaurants for those who enjoy all food.

Outside of the main vegetarian restaurants, be prepared to eat a lot of Schafskase (Feta Cheese) as this seems to be the main alternative to meat in dishes around here, especially with the Turkish influence in the town.

    Tie Restaurant: Organic/Vegetarian

  • Restaurant Name: Tie Restaurant

Probably the most obvious choice for the vegetarian is the wholefood (Naturkost) restaurant Tie on Leopoldstraße 14. Just take a right at the steps to the park in the main square, and keep walking. The food here is organic, and very fresh, and also a little pricier than elsewhere. They also serve a number of organic meat dishes, so be sure to ask what is "vegitarisch". They don't speak a lot of English here, but they try. The place opens every evening but Tuesday.

While Tie is the obvious choice, it didn't prove to be the only vegetarian option, nor my favourite. Annabell's, at Bahnhoffstr. 1, is only open in the afternoon's for lunch, but provided some delicious home cooked food. The service is friendly, and on every occasion I went there was someone who spoke English well enough to explain the menu to me. The soup was particularly good, and kept me coming back for more.

The Hungry Highlander: Friendly Scottish run Bar/Restaurant

  • Restaurant Name: The Hungry Highlander

Although not a vegetarian restaurant, the Hungry Highlander on Steingasse 11 provided plenty of vegetarian options, all clearly marked with a 'V'. The staff were also highly proficient at speaking English (the owner is a Scotsman), and explained the menu and even offered to provide some of the non-vegetarian dishes without the meat. The staff here were extremely friendly, and the food was extremely good value, so if you like vegetarian food or not, then you should make a beeline for this place.

This place is very popular, and can get packed out on a weekend, so it's worth coming early if you want a seat.

    Costa's Taverna: Friendly Greek Taverna

  • Restaurant Name: Costa's Taverna

If Costa is the man serving the night I visited, he is helpful almost to the point of being obsequious. That isn't a complaint, and it is quite refreshing in comparison to the surly attitude shown at the other Greek restaurant in town, but it can be a little off-putting if you are not used to it. The food, however, is excellent, and while not many options for a vegetarian, there were plenty of starters to pick and mix from. The waiter didn't speak any English, but was patient enough for me to uncover what was what through my broken English. If you are unsure, just order the Schafskase and Grun Salat. It is all "sehr gut".

Adelphi: Not so friendly Greek restaurant

  • Restaurant Name: Adelphi

Just opposite Annabell's is the Adelphi Greek restaurant. The food here is excellent, although extremely limited for vegetarians; the schafskase omelette and the folia kartofel (baked potato) are about your only choices. The deserts are also excellent. The service could be improved considerably, however. Apart from not speaking a word of English, which is forgiveable, the staff are surly and food is just dropped on your table, like the trip to your table was a real nuicance to them.

    Maccaroni's: Fine Italian Restaurant

  • Restaurant Name: Maccaroni's

This was my first meal in Coburg, and while the choices for vegetarians are limited to Caprese salads and pizzas, the quality of the food and service is top notch. The owners are true Italians, and speak a number of languages fluently, including English and French, and of course Italian and German. It's little surprise to find this is one of the most popular restaurants in all of Coburg.

    Kartoffel: Potato Heaven

  • Restaurant Name: Kartoffel

Specialising in all things potato, the Kartoffel, the name of which you can probably work out the meaning, is a cosy little eaterie just outside the main drag. The place is much like an English pub, but serves very German food, most of it based around the potato. Potato soup, fried potato pancakes, Thurlingian potato dumplings, potato wedges, etc. Being a very German restaurant, there's not much in the way of vegetarian food, and even the potato soup has meat in. There is at least one vegetarian option, and you can, as usual, take the schafskase salat mit kartoffelpuffer. The food is good, and filling, and the service is friendly, even if they can't speak English. Don't take your best clothes, though, or plan to go out after eating there, as your clothes will smell overwhelmingly of fried potatoes!

The place is big, clean and the dishes are decent, but I wasn't impressed. It didn't help that the only vegetarian option was pretty unpalatable, and it didn't seem to impress anyone else either. The service was acceptable, but nothing special, the same as the food. Expensive too, for what you get. Probably only worth it if you are staying at the hotel and are too lazy to try anything else.

    Filou: Italian Style Cafe

  • Restaurant Name: Filou

The Filou is a cosy, and quite chic, little cafe close to the station, serving up mostly Italian style dishes, like pizza and pasta. The food is either very good or acceptable, and the service is friendly. The staff tends to be able to speak a little English. It's often very busy, and it can feel a little cramped, but the food and atmosphere usually makes up for it. There's usually a good number of vegetarian options, if you can figure out what they are. Good coffee too.
