What a Suprise

by cleocat - last update: Apr 26, 2004

At dune 7 near Walvis Bay
Well I must say i was sceptical about going to Namibia but my mother and brother were going mad about this beautiful place so I had to go and have a look myself.

As I said what a suprise. I never thought the desert can be so fascinating. We basicly stayed in Swakopmund and from there went to Walvis and Henties Bay. Swakop is enough for me. It is breathtaking. Driving at 2:30 in the afternoon from Walvis to Swakop with the see still foggy on the one side and the neverending dunes on the other was a storybook picture. Not to deep into the sea were quite a few boats just visisble in the fog. It looked like a scene from a pirate movie. I will never forget it. The town of Swakop looks like a oasis
in the dessert. Nobody can describe it's beauty you have to see it yourself. Close to the airport in Walvis is dune 7 the highest dune. I reached the top, tought I was going to die but it was worth it. Namibia's beauty is unique. See it!!!
Welwitchia

Welwitchia

As far as I know Namibia is the only place where the Welwitchia is found. It gets very old and has only two leaves but it looks like a lot because it is torn. It is a very unusual plant. I would not call it pretty though.
Hotel Europahof

The Beautiful hotels

I just love this hotel. We didn't stay there but the architecture fascinated me. At night it looks like something out of a fairy tale.

There are lots of buildings in the same style. There are a lot of German people still in Namibia and German is spoken a lot.

Pros:"It is beautiful!!!! For South African's - Everything feels familiar. they accept rand and the value is the same as the Namibian Dollar. You will however get you change in Namibian Dollars. Lots of SA products on the shelves."
Cons:"Nothing!!!!! Nothing!!!! I will go back and back and back..................."
In A Nutshell:"Breathtaking views - Friendly people"

great page about Namibia, and nice to see the traces of Germany there, including the Martin Luther-story, that is a good excample of german mis-managment as well ;-)
