  • We are very restless travelers. We don't seem to have the ability to stay in one place, there is always something we need to see. i know there are some people that can go to Durban or Margate or where ever and spend the whole week or two in this one place.

From Hermanus the road to Arniston goes through many little interesting towns like Bedford, Napier, Agulhas, Struisbaai etc.

This can easily be done as a daytrip. Our intention was only to stop at Agulhas and then travel onto Arniston but at the end we stopped in many of the little towns .

  • Many of these little towns have very interesting architecture. I love old buidlings and in the cities big modern buidlings run the show.

The picture is of a church in Napier. A little town on the way to Arniston

  • Arniston is quiet, beautiful little fishing village
just over a 100 km from Hermanus.

Arniston is also know as Waenhuiskrans.
The name came from the massive Waenhuiskrans ( Wagon House Cave) – so named because it is large enough to turn a wagon with a full team of oxen. The cave is only accessible at low tide for an hour or two.

The name Arniston came from a a British transport ship HMS Arniston that sank round about 1815. About a 100 people stay there permanently. It is a very popular holiday area and a lot of the houses are holiday houses. Out of season it is very quiet.

Take a walk to the cave, even if you cannot enter it is worthwhile seeing.

  • Here you'll discover an authentic fishing village – also known as Kassiesbaai – dating back to the early 19th Century, and now a national monument.

Wander down to the harbour and buy your fish directly from the boat. Fresh and cheap.

  • Onrus is a few km away from Hermanus.
It has sandy beaches. Ideal for the kids to play.
Hermanus doesn't have much of a beach area. If you need some sand and water go to Onrus.

Usually you have to rent a boat to go whale watching. You’re lucky to fins a spot where you can watch whales from shore.

I love Hermanus :) We bought a divine blue wood mirror there with metal dolphins on it. It's in storage in CT :( Sucha beautiful area. Thanks for the memories! Jen x
