Solomon Islands Warnings Or Dangers

Warnings Or Dangers: Tropical Heat/Sunburn
  • Tip Rating:
  • The heat in the Solomon Islands can be oppressive, especially if you've flown in from a temperate location such as North America or Europe. Be sure to allow for a couple days of rest when you arrive, if possible, before undertaking any physically strenuous activities such as hiking or climbing. And make sure to drink a lot of water.

When you're this close to the equator, it's not difficult to get a sunburn. Be careful about how much time you expose your skin to the direct rays of the sun. I went snorkeling for a couple hours and got the worst sunburn of my trip while out in Gizo.

    Warnings Or Dangers: Malaria!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Malaria is rife in the Solomon Islands. At the time of my visit, there was no hotter place in the world for the disease than here. I met numerous locals during my stay who were suffering from it, and they didn't seem to think much of it. They treated it just like the common cold. It comes; it goes. Of course, you should NOT have this attitude. Untreated, malaria can be deadly and at the least can spoil your trip or put you out of commission for a few days.

Be sure to see a travel doctor before you visit; they will probably give you a prescription for malaria pills (e.g. Lariam or Malarone) to help slow down the effects of the disease should you contract it. The pills are NOT a vaccine and you should still wear long trousers at night or at least cover your body with insect repellent of some sort.

Warnings Or Dangers: Water in Gizo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Gizo seems to be subject to frequent water shortages and brief droughts--surprising given its location near the equator and its lush surroundings. When I was there, the water at my lodge almost ran out entirely. If you are asked to conserve water, please do your part. The water at my lodge came from a catchment tank, not from a city water utility company, so we really had nobody to rely on for conservation but ourselves.

I lived in Buala for 2 years in the 1980s as a Peace Corps volunteer and had a wonderful time. Also, traveled in Small Malaita and Guadalcanal. Great people and much beautiful scenery. I have heard Gizo is the best place to visit for scuba and snorkeling

Lovely pictures. My father may have been there, under harsh circumstances of course (1944 WWII).
