For those planning to visit Champagne Beach or who are looking for a mercilessly romantic place to spend a few days, you can't do better than this. Facilities are basic, but the setting is nothing short of world-class. And best of all, nobody seems to know that yet!
For about US$19 (in 1997), you get a basic bungalow with a bed and mosquito net as well as a kerosene lamp. There is no electricity. There are, however, flush toilets and a tap. Food is a bit of a problem. There doesn't seem to be a town of any size nearby, so unless you want to mount an expedition in search of local food, you're looking at eating the meals at the adjacent restaurant. Breakfast IS included, although this consists of nothing more than tea, a pile of toast, and a large slice of papaya.
Unique Qualities: There are two outstanding characteristics of this lodge. First, its proximity to Champagne Beach makes it the best choice (in my opinion) for those who have come up here exclusively to visit that particular stretch of sand. The beach is only about 1 kilometer away--an easy stroll, especially in the morning when it's still cool out.
The other outstanding characteristic of this lodge is its own beachfront location. It's situated at the edge of yet another spectactular white sand beach lapped by blue-green waves. There are a few islands out a distance from shore, and the whole scene is an ideal image of a South Pacific paradise. If you stay here on a night when the moon is full or near full, you're in for a treat. This was the case during my visit, and the moonlight was so intense I easily walked around without a torch. I could see small crabs scurrying across the sand and the tops of the coconut palms, which swayed gently and reflected so much moonlight they seemed like they were being lit up by some sort of Hollywood special effects crew. One of the most pleasant, reflective nights of my life...honestly.
