Beyond Bavarian Breweries

Frauenkirche - signature building of Munich
I had heard a lot of great things about Munich, but I was still a little bit apprehensive about spending a long weekend there. I must admit that nights over huge mugs of beer in a big hall is not exactly my idea of a fun night out. Not that I'm totally against the whole idea. My friends have evidence from a trip to Prague last summer where I had more than my fair share of beer and other drinks in a similar atmosphere! That being said, I decided to take the plunge, taking the overnight train to Munich for the long weekend. And I am happy to report that it was worth the trip and even more fun than I could have imagined.

There is so much more to Munich than Oktoberfest and beer. I discovered a number of wonderful art museums, good restaurants, ample quality shopping, and plenty of nice bars and cafes to wile away the evening hours. And walking the city streets, even in February, provided a number of great photo opportunities and beautiful buildings with varied architecture.

If visiting Germany, definitely include some days in Munich, and as I did, it is also worth taking a trip there from farther afield.
