Danubian Dream

Claudio Magris gets straight to the point in his book "Danube," written after he and some friends traveled the length of the great river. "Budapest is the loveliest city on the Danube." I would have to agree. There might be more beautiful points of interest, ruins, castles, etc. along the mighty river; but as far as a big city on the Danube...Budapest has to rank first.
Budapest Phone Booths and Subway Stop
The Danube is running north/south through Hungary, and cuts through the city this way as well. I don't need to tell you about the major sites. Any visitor to this city will be bombarded by this city's beauty: the river, the lovely bridges each with its own style, Buda Castle, lovely churches...and even away from the Danube, from Heroes' Square and down Andrassy ut, to lovely streets on castle hill (some of the streets are actually stairs), the museums, etc. Beauty and grandeur surround you with almost every step.
Buda Royal Palace and Chain Bridge
One note: I have nothing against Vienna. Actually at the end of the day, it is probably still my favorite city to visit. But not because of the Danube. Vienna has so much to offer, perhaps so much so that the Danube becomes a bit of anafterthought. Nevermind the Strauss waltz....for me, Budapest is synonymous with the glory and beauty that can only be identified with one of the world's great rivers. Budapest is the jewel in the crown that is the Danube.
