| Blue Skies through Evora's Roman Temple |
The enchanting walled city of Evora rises out of the plains of Alentejo. I decided to make this the first stop in my week-long journey to Portugal. I was not disappointed. The town was most prominent through the middle ages and under the Romans...whose influence can be readily seen today. Evora was a popular residence of Portuguese kings, but fell out of favor after Spain's annexation of Portugal in 1580. Its influence waned further when the Jesuit University closed in the 18th Century. But Evora is now once again a university town, thronging with students, along with the other locals and the tourists who find there way to this beautiful town. The city's historical legacy was officially recognized in 1986, when UNESCO declared Evora a World Heritage site. Evora is definitely worth a visit of a day or two. |
