One of the highlights of my week in Portugal was a visit to the hilltop medieval village of Marvao, on the eastern border near Spain. The views from the walls of the town and its imposing castle are amazing...you can see the Serra de Sao Mamede to the west and south and the Spanish frontier to the east from a hieght of almost 3000 feet (900 m).
Driving my car up the winding roads to the hilltop, then inside and along the walls of the old town was a bit intimidating but amazing at the same time. There is a charming small town within the walls (population around 300), and I stayed at a lovely pousada.
Peaceful, romantic, and unlike any other place I saw in Portugal, I would suggest adding Marvao to your itinerary if you have time when visiting Portugal. |

Very nice pics and great tips here. It must have been fantastic sitting up there in your pousada as the sun went down! | barrikello Sat Jul 23, 2005 11:46 UTC Hi John, nice tips on a wonderful off the track place! I went there in 2001 and it was probably my favourite spot in Portugal. |
