Coffee Shops: Coffeeshops -- the reason many come to Amsterdam.
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are dozens of them -- coffeeshops where you can purchase and consume marijuana and hashish.
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but there are lots of folks (see the channels.nl website forums) who go to A-Dam almost exclusively to sample the cannabis at these shops.
Many shops also sell beer or soft drinks and snacks. Some even have considerable food menus.
You can purchase the weed and hash from a menu that lists the strains and the prices per gram. Basically, for about $10 U.S. or less, you can buy enough weed to knock you on your butt for a day or two.
The "dealers" in the coffeeshops are very knowledgeable and can advise customers on what strains of cannibis give what kinds of highs. Most of the strains were developed by medical marijuana growers.
Just don't buy drugs on the streets. Stick to the coffeeshops. And don't try to take any with you when you leave.
The Dampkring is my favorite coffeeshop. DeKuil is nice too.
I've got to say, if you're interested in visiting Amsterdam for the cofffeeshop scene, read Blueberry_7's pages on VT. Her information about weed, the shops and everything associated with them is excellent. Her pages helped me prepare for and enjoy my first trip there.
    Smoke one for me.

    Things To Do: Walking
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Amsterdam is one of the best cities in the world for just walking. Strike out in any direction and you'll find interesting architecture, parks, canals, shopping areas, museums, restaurants and more.
Yes, you need to learn to be alert when walking in or across the bicycle lanes. But once you've mastered the art of dodging cyclists, all you need is a comfortable pair of walking shoes. If you get tired, you can always walk to the nearest busy street and catch a bus or tram. But if you can walk a couple of miles comfortably you can walk pretty much anywhere of interest in Amsterdam.

China Town: Foot massage in Chinatown
  • Tip Rating:
  • Forget the ladies in the Red Light District. If you want a really sensual experience, one you can tell the folks about back home, then stop in at one of the reflexology and foot-massage spas on the Zeedijk in Chinatown. There are at least three such spas, all located about where Zeedijk curves around toward the RLD if you're walking south.
For about 35Euros you get an hour of heaven. The foot massage is especially wonderful if you've been walking around Amsterdam for two or three days and your "dogs are barking."
I recommend the establishment that's the furtherest north on the street. They take you upstairs to a room filled with big, comfy easy chairs. They stick your feet in a tub of steaming, scented water. While your feet soak they massage your temples and forearms and hands. Then, after 20 minutes or so, they take your feet out of the water and wrap them in warm towels, then unwrap one at a time for a 20-minute massage of each foot.

Directions: On Zeedijk, a couple of blocks south from Prins Henrikaade (sp?) near Central Station, or a block or so north of the Chinese temple on the same street.
