Canyons, Rivers and Hoodoo Rocks | Yes, I know it's phallic. But it's also beautiful. |
Visitors to the United States often overlook what may be the most scenic of the contiguous 48 states. Lots of states have wonderful natural attractions, but few can rival Utah for grandeur and scenery. My favorite part of the state is the southeast corner, where Green River, Moab, the upper end of Lake Powell, and several major rivers and slick-rock canyons are located. It has Arches National Park, Canyon Lands, the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers, San Juan River, the Esclante and more. If you want to see the kind of scenery you've scene in old western movies, float down a white-water river, hike or mountain-bike through some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in North America, southeast Utah is the place for you. The canyons are full of ancient Anasazi dwellings and granaries and other structures, stuck the canyon walls like so many wren nests. There's abundant wildlife to be scene, and great weather for several months each year. |
| | Arches Arches National Park, a small park near Moab, is a gem. No matter whether you're confined to a car by age or infirmity, or fit and energetic and ready for long hikes, Arches has lots to offer. Many of the park's most beautiful scenic features can be seen from the window of your car. But many more await those who don't mind a little walking. If you want some real insight to this area, read Edward Abbey's classic book, "Desert Solitaire," written after he worked as a ranger in this park. |
| | Green River One of the best ways to see Utah is from an inflatable raft, floating down the Green River, the Colorado River or one of several other rivers. There are several floats to choose from and several companies, many of them operating out of the town of Green River. Trips start up near the Wyoming border at the Flaming Gorge Dam, and continue all the way down to Lake Powell. The "Gates of Lodore" float trip on the Green is a good one. |
