Looking for Nessie

by caminoreal - last update: Jun 14, 2004

Fishing for salmon on the loch.
A few years ago I was privileged to be take part in a week-long sonar search of Loch Ness, organized by Lowrance Electronics. About 50 sonar-equipped boats lined up side-by-side and swept the loch from one end to the other, looking for Nessie.
They didn't find her (him, it, or whatever), of course, but it was a good publicity stunt for the U.S. sonar manufacturer and a good tourism boost for the Loch.
But even though I didn't find a sea monster, I found a wonderful place in and around Loch Ness and Inverness.
The local folk, from the fishing bailiff on the loch to the bartenders in the Inverness pubs, were all as friendly as could be to the horde of Yanks who invaded the area during the Nessie search.
The fish and chips in Inverness (I ate them every time I went to town, I think.) were the best I've had anywhere in the U.K.
Avoid the haggis! Had to try it, since that was my first visit to Scotland, but once was enough.
It doesn't take long to see Loch Ness, but it's worth the trip. It's beautiful and mysterious, whether you take Nessie seriously or not. Even if you're a skeptic like me, gazing out at the fog-shrouded loch and its tannin-blackened water as dark nears makes you understand why people believe that anything could be out there.

Nessie is good at hiding, but did they happen to tell you if Nessie has 2 or 3 humps? ;-)
