Great Architecture, Green Spaces, Tackiness Galore | Tacky but not aggressive. |
Nara is a lovely place to visit for a day or two. A manageable city, with the green spaces of Nara Park, the beautiful architecture of Todai-ji, the excitement of near escapes from the ever hungry killer deer, and (dare I say?) the tackiness of an English seaside resort.
Nara has it all! |
Todai-ji Beautiful Todai-ji is the crowning glory of Nara. This is supposedly the largest wooden structure in the world, and it houses the largest bronze statue in Japan: The Great Buddah. You will no doubt appreciate the stunning architecture and the escape it provides from the rabid deer of Nara park, sadly however there is no escape from the megaphone wielding Japanese tour leaders. |

The Deer The novelty of Nara's deer quickly wears off. These beasts want blood! In order to protect themselves, the peole of Nara have come up with a great scheme - get tourists to buy biscuits for the deer, so that the deer eat the tourists rather than them! Don't believe the locals displays of sympathy when you show them the stump where your middle finger used to be! |

aussiedoug Fri Feb 18, 2005 09:15 UTC Is Kasuga Taisha the Shinto Shrine near Todai-ji? I found it so preferable with its calm serenity compared to the loud clanging, banging cacophony of the other. Yes & the deer should definitely be under warnings & dangers! Gr8 tips Mike. | mfc10 Sun May 23, 2004 21:51 UTC Hi Mike, great pics of phenomenal Nara! |
