Uji, located between Nara and Kyoto (but also easily accessible from Osaka) makes a great half day trip. The town itself is not of particular interests to tourists, but there are a couple of stunning temples which are well worth a visit.
You can also try the excellent green tea (drink, ice cream, cake!) for which the town is also famous. |

The National Heritage site, Byodo-in, is Uji's major drawcard, however the nearby Mimurotoji Temple is also well worth a visit, and though not spectacular, Uji Shrine is located conveniently between the two. For details on how to get to Uji - pleases see my transportation tip. |
For Tourist Information, there is an office located on the South west bank of Uji River, beyond where the road brances off to Byodo-in. As Uji is on the Keihan and JR lines, it might be a good idea to combine it with a trip to Fushimi Inari where you can take a really interesting walk, for a full day out of sightseeing around Kyoto, with a nice bit of exercise thrown in! Check out my tips for more pictures and information. |
