Fushimi Inari is located on the Keihan line, just 6 stops South of Keihan Sanjo in Kyoto, and is the starting point for an unusual 2 hour (approx) walk over Kyotos' nearby hills.
The track leads under more than 10,000 red tori gates, at times they are so close together it seems like you are walking through coridors inside a building rather than being outside.
One possible walk is from Fushimi Inari to nearby Tofukuji ((2 stops nearer to Kyoto). Doing this walk you start off at the bright red shrine, Fushimi Inari Taisha, and end up at the impressive temple Tofukuji, both of which are worth stopping off at to have a look.
Not only does this walk go through the tori gates and take in a couple of religious buildings. It is also crowded with hundreds of fox statues, some of which look brand spanking new and some of which are covered with a thick layer of moss. Even if the statues themselves don't impress you, the sheer number of them will.
As this walk is on the Keihan line and the JR line, it might be a good idea to combine it with a trip to Uji for a full day out of sightseeing around Kyoto, with a nice bit of exercise thrown in!
Check out my tips for more pictures and information.
- Pros:A great walk - shrines, tori and foxes - convenient access and its free!
- Cons:Don't forget mosquito repellant in the Summer.
- In a nutshell:Combined with a trip to Uji this makes an ideal day out.
