General Info There seems to be a lack of information about Togo on VT, so considering that I live and work here, I figured I'd try and help out. I will just try and post some info that is not always readily available. |
Getting Here Lome is the only international airport. If you don't fly in, then you're overlanding from Ghana, Benin, or Burkina Faso. You can get a 7 day visa at the airport and/or the borders. The price varies depending on the country your passport was issued from.
The Aflao Border post for Ghana-Togo is notoriously difficult. Expect to be hassled and asked for a dash (a tip...or bribe, depending on your definition).
The Togo-Benin border at Hillacondji is much easier in comparison to Aflao. Just fill the forms and cross. No problem.
I have not crossed the border at Burkina Faso yet, so I will not comment on that one. |
Where to Go Of course it all depends on you. If you are just passing through from Ghana -> Benin you can check out Lome and Aneho.
If you have more time, head north from Lome to Kpalime. This is a mountainous area with waterfalls and butterflies. Very scenic, but not at the end of the dry season. I went once in January and it was all dead, not nearly as picturesque as during the wet season.
For more adventure, head north through Atakpame, Sokode, and towards Kara. From this area you can see one of Togo's true treasures, the Tamberma Valley. You should be able to do this as a one day side trip from the main road. Worth the stop if you're coming or going to Burkina Faso. |

| Pros: | "Friendly people, unique cultures, fun if you like to rough it" | | Cons: | "Hot & humid, Lome is not that clean, Hot & humid" | | In A Nutshell: | "A nice place to visit, but try living here!" |
