Sports Travel: The Green Room

Let's face it, the only real sport travel to the GC is for surfing. Sure there are rugby teams, both league and union, some great jet boat racing and of course the Indy car races but surfing is the main stay of the Coast.

The best breaks vary from day to day but the most reliable is Duranbah at the southern end of the coast. The are others but it is the best on most days but the one we all wait for is when Kirra is pumping. It is the longest break in the world and I have ridden it for a kilometre. Sure it is a long walk back but it is worth it.

Equipment: Most surfers bring their own boards but there are tons of board retailers on the coast from small single operator shapers up to Billabong.

Aside from surfing, if there is one thing the Gold Coast has a ton of, it's golf courses. These range from the Merrimac hackers, which is literally a cow paddock, to the very exclusive private courses of Arundel Hills and the Grand.

For the most part you can get a round plus cart for about $50-75 at a decent course like Emerald Lakes, where they hold the Queensland PGA. For a slightly better course, say Royal Pines or Lakelands, the only Jack Nicklaus designed course in Australia, it will set you back about $100.

Equipment: Most courses will insist that each player has their own set of clubs. If you don't want to bring them with you, most pro shops have them to hire at varying rates depending on the clubs.

Many of the better courses offer a free hotel pick up and drop off service as well.

hey goldcoaster, some great tips here. I will look at your page more closely over the next few days. I'll be coming your way in sept. maybe they'll be a VT or something. I'll try to set something up i think.

The coffee shop and bar within the hotel are vacant ! Also, errors with check-in and booked services resulted with a rude response from the reception manager; no apology, all blame entirely to the booking agent. We won't be staying there again.
