Great Beginning or End to a West Coast Adventure

We did a loop around the South Island starting in Christchurch and heading directly over to the West Coast, so Hokitika was the perfect place to stop and rest before our lovely drive down the West Coast. I chose Hokitika because of its location and that I found a lovely little cottage that was a great deal and suited our 2 couples perfectly. Hokitika was a small, quaint community that we all enjoyed.

We made sure we took a drive down to the beach area at Hokitika before it got dark. There was alot of debris scattered around, but that didn't seem to make any difference to the two girls we saw having a blast making a sand castle. We also saw a man walking his dog, both who seemed to really be enjoying their evening walk.

But did it rain? I've never yet seen Hokitika except through pouring rain! Have you read Rose Tremain's "The Colour" - set in the NZ gold rush - v. good. leyle
