One of the best views in the World?

by SueWarwick - last update: Jul 3, 2005

The View

Thurstaston

Thurstaston is basically split in to two halves with Telegraph road between the two parts.

To one side (the right as you come from Heswall) is Thurstaston Common to the other side is Wirral Country Park.

Recently I met a man from Somerset walking in Thurstaston Common who described the view from the hill as one of the 5 best views in the world.

Looking at the picture it is not difficult to see why.
On a clear day you can easily see Wales, the whole of the Wirral Peninsula and on a very good day, Blackpool Tower.
Views to Wales

Thurstaston Common

Thurstaston Common is about 3km North West of Heswall.
The area is mostly heathland with woodland towards Royden Park.
Most of the pathways are sandstone.

It is home to several birds such as sparowhawks owls and woodpeckers.

Some say the name Thurstaston comes from Thors Stone, the large sandstone block. The name actualy comes from Old Norse for Thorstienns's Ton (farmstead).

Wirral Country Park

On the opposite side of the road is Wirral Country Park.
This part of Thurstaston contains the Visitors Centre.
From here you can walk along the Wirral Way towards West Kirby and Parkgate or spend some time on the beach.

Have to admit to having a similar experience myself, my order for a coffee was forgotten.

We visited the Church Farm cafe recently and had an awful experience. The room was cold. The service was slow - our tea did not arrive. My meal was cold. My daughter's meal arrived 10 minutes later. The prices are expensive. The staff couldn’t care.
