Luxor Temple: A wonderful guide to the history of the world

  • Even on the 8th day of our trip to Egypt, one of the things I was truly amazed at is the craft done by people over 5000 years ago. It is unimaginable to think about how long it took the Egyptians to build all of this, but the Luxor Temple and its connection to the Temple at Karnak is truly amazing. 2.5 miles seperates the two, but they are linked together by a row of ram guardian.

  • The Luxor temple is 20 Egyptian pounds to enter... that is about 3.50 US, but don't think of this as an entrance fee, but rather an investment in preserving the heritage of one of the oldest civilizations in the world.

Enjoy... and just think, even if you do not like it... McDonald's is right around the corner!

    Karnak Temple: Karnak Temple Lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the things that was important in the days of the Egyptians was the ability to have a water supply within a temple. Here is where they housed the fish and watered the animals to support the temple.

Here is a picture of my fiance in front of the lake within the Temple grounds!

    Karnak Temple: Hatshetsup's Obelisk
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the distinguishing objects at the Temple of Karnak is the Obelisk of Hatshetsup. If you look closely at the Obelisk, you will notice that it is multi-colored. This is because early after the obelisk was built, another Pharaoh ( I believe a son-in law) came and covered the obelisk all the way up until the word started speaking of the God Amun-Ra.

I would definitely recommend a guided tour... it will help explain what I did not!

  • This is the ticket to the Karnak Temple, which is connected by 2.5 miles of rams until you reach Luxor Temple. This is definitely the most expansive of the temples that I saw on my trip, so I would definitely recommend that you stop in and see it!

Again, its about 3.50 US dollars, or 20 L.E.

Colossi of Memnon: Don't make this the highlight of your trip!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Along our way back from Hatshetsup's Temple and the Valley of the Kings, we stopped along at what appeared to be a small rest stop. It was actually an area dedicated to the Colossi of Memnon.

Ancient Egyptians called the southern of the two statues "Ruler of Rulers". Later travelers called them "Shammy and "Tammy", which may have been a corruption of the Arabic words for "left" and "right". Today they are known locally as "el-Colossat", or "es-Salamat".

    Temple of Hatshepsut: Hatshetsup's Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Luxor Temple of Hatshepsut
  • Long distance view of Hatshetsup's
  • Temple

  • To see this temple, you definitely have to take into consideration the person who it is dedicated to... Queen Hatshetsup was actually a pharaoh, and a woman... which were supposed to be mutually exclusive. She actually convinced the country that she was in fact a man to become the Pharaoh.

This temple is definitely different than the others. It is built into the side of the mountain, and is right next to the site of an older destroyed temple.

It also has a wonderful view of the Lower Nile Valley.
