Getting TO/AROUND: Do not miss out on the opportunity to see Auckland by air. One of the unique things about this city is that when you are on a flight from Australia, you actually fly all the way over the city, circle around, and make your approach back across the city before landing. It is only about 5 minutes wide by plane, as New Zealand is a very slender strip of island. The view of the bays and small pennisulas are really great, although I do wish that they would have cleaned our windows before the trip, so we could have taken a couple more pictures that were worthwhile! Auckland International Airport is AKL, and it is serviced by several major carriers, but the big ones are Air New Zealand, Qantas, LAN Chile, and United.

Getting TO/AROUND: Auckland has done alot to serve the residents and tourists of New Zealand by rennovating the central station for buses, trains and connections to ferries. A multi-million dollar project transformed the Britomart Place station. $204 million to be specific... that is a large investment in public transportation! Although we were not able to go in (the station closes at 10pm), you will definitely be able to get all over Auckland, much less the rest of the North Island. For more information on stations and schedules, check out the Britomart webpage.

Getting TO/AROUND: One of the most unique things I saw in Auckland was what was known as a "Lolly-Scramble". During my drive with Kiwi, Sarah and Kiwi's Mum Morepork, we were driving toward the Skytower complex when we came across a group of people crossing every which way on the street, I asked what it was. Morepork explained to me that both sides of traffic actually get red lights, allowing people to criss-cross the street more quickly than making a square with the lights. It became termed as a lolly-scramble because it looks similar to what would happen if you threw candy out for a group of kids and they all scrambled out to pick it up.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you are spending most of your time in Auckland's CBD, or are thinking about heading out to the middle of the North Island, I would definitely recommend taking the supershuttle from the airport to your Auckland hotel, and then renting your car from one of the CBD rental facilities. The Supershuttle will run you about 20 NZD, and then 5 NZD per additional person in your group, which makes for a very inexpensive journey to the airport. Our driver was also not the smartest tool in the shed, and he almost forgot to take our money when we arrived at the airport. They do pick up from most hotels in the CBD, as well as making house calls. Make sure you place a call at least 2 hours before your flight.
