"Ceramics and the Loop of the Saar" Mettlach by christine.j

Mettlach Travel Guide: 17 reviews and 45 photos

Mettlach is a small town in the north-western corner of the Saarland, very close to both France and Luxembourg. It became famous because of the ceramic factory Villeroy and Boch, which is still there and is still a famous brand.
Nearby the river Saar does what would be called a u-turn if it were a car, the loop of the Saar - Saarschleife.

Mettlach, however, is a lot older than the ceramic factory. An abbey was founded here in 7th century by St Luitwinus and it's the home of the oldest Christian building in the Saarland, a tower, simply called the old tower.

St Luitwinus' statue still guards the entrance to Mettlach, standing on the square next to the pier. Legend has it that he had been resting in the sun after hunting, and an eagle had shielded him from the hot and bright rays by flying directly above him. When Luitwinus woke up, he took this to be a sign from heaven to build an abbey on this very spot.

This is a lovely Town. What a beautiful scenic view, and like you, I love that sculpture! Incredible how tall it is compared to you!

WOW!! Not enough room for this splendid tour :-) I love the Erdgeist and thought immediately of Der Riese at Swarovski! The hotel looks and sounds gorgeous (also from website) and V&B... oh my, I must come one day :-)
