by train to Vienna: City Night Line -a very comfortable train

Getting TO/AROUND: City Night Line is a very comfortable night train. You can book a reclining seat, a couchette or a complete bedroom. We had booked the reclining seat, it was a lot more comfortable that for example a seat in a plane. Pillows and blankets are provided. Since the train only stops in some stations to let people on or off, you get a few hours uninterrupted sleep at night. The conductors make notes where people want to get off and come to wake them in the morning.
You save a night in a hotel and you can save a lot a money, if you book one of their specials. We paid 29 Euro each, now - February 2006 - they have an offer for 19 Euro.

Getting TO/AROUND: Because of the short notice we had for our stay in Vienna, all direct cheap flights had long been booked. The same was true for specials for the train. We didn't want to drive , so I started looking again at flights and came across the pages of Swiss Air. We got our flights through Switzerland, first Zürich, then Geneva, for about 25% of what a direct flight from Frankfurt to Vienna would have been. We booked Swiss Air and flew Lufthansa, Austrian Airways and Tyrolean Airways, a bit tiring because of the waiting in between flights, but generally very good service. I'll never understand the way the airlines make their money, though.

    Transportation: Airport Bus

Getting TO/AROUND: From Vienna airport we took the Airport bus to Schwedenplatz. The stop is very easy to find, just outside the airport doors. The luggage hold was open and we put our bags in it, then boarded the bus and paid the driver. The fare is six Euro a person one way. This is a very trusting system,as the area is really busy and once your bags are in the bus there is no protection against theft whatsoever. The doors of the luggage hold are left open until a minute before departure. Don't bring expensive looking luggage or it may disappear in the general hustle and bustle there.
Apart from this I found the airport bus very convenient. Our trip took about 35 minutes, this depends on the traffic, of course.

Getting TO/AROUND: I was so impressed by the underground system in Vienna! Even though there were masses of football fans in addition to the usual tourists plus of course the commuters of Vienna themselves, the trains were fast, efficient, mostly clean and inexpensive. If possible I would love to send some managers of German public transport companies to Vienna to do their homework.
The ticket machines - touch screen - worked each time, while here in Germany someone once told me to clean the screen first. A single ticket within Vienna was 1.70 Euro, Mannheim, where I live, is much smaller and asks for 2.10 Euro.

Vienna certainly has many interesting and wonderful tourist attractions. A visit to the zoo, museums and entertaining oneself with classical music are some of the better known attractions. We hope to visit the city of Vienna one day! ~ho & pang

Reading these wonderful descriptions makes me want to go to Vienna again. I think you fell under its spell also, judging from these tips. I'd love to conduct the orchestra. Next time :))
