I was running down Bayswater Road before sunrise when I saw something colourful lit in the distance and I was wondering what it was. I didn't remember anything colourful near Marble Arch. When I got closer, I thought it looked like a gummibear family, but didn't really believe this. However, when I arrived at the sculpture, it was a gummibear family, or rather a jelly baby family as I later learned.
It's part of the sculpture festival of the City of Westminster and was created by the Italian sculptor Mauro Perucchetti. If you want to see it you have to hurry, it will only be there until mid-April 2011, I was told.
Update June 2011:
When I was in London two weeks ago, I saw that the jelly family is still standing there. It seems they've earned themselves a permanent stay. I'd love this.
Update September 2012:
I still saw the funny family in April this year, but during a recent visit I noticed they were gone. Too bad, they were a nice and funny addition to the many statues in London.
This picture was taken at Regent's Canal. Many boats have moored there,
adding their colours to the green foliage and the green water. Not exactly the picture that comes to one's mind when hearing of London, but also one of the many faces of this city.
I've been in love with London ever since I got separated from my youth group, got lost and found my way back all by myself at the age of thirteen, without speaking a single word of English.
Yes, I know it's a big difference if you're there as a tourist for a few days or if you're living there.
And,yes, I know it's an expensive city. (Do I know this!)
But it's still a city where you can turn around a corner or walk through a small gateway and suddenly you're in a completely different world. The many, many faces of this huge city! To experience this you have to walk, and London is a very walkable city.
You won't find any tips here about the Tower, Buckingham Palace or the Changing of the Guard, it's been ages since I last stood in these long queues. There's no need for any more of these tips anyway, as there are excellent pages about London on VT. So, just a few tips about hotels and some what-to-do suggestions.
- Pros:Many different faces, great museums, wonderful parks
- Cons:Even when budgeting, it's not exactly cheap
- In a nutshell:£££ - but worth it!

Christine, After reading your page, I want to go back and see those "gems" of museums you found. We didn't have enough time, but Little Venice was on my list. Nice to read about it and how you enjoyed your time there. A really great page for those wanting to see something different in London.
Very interesting page! I added some tips to my trip planner. How sad that the book shop has closed, it must have been wonderful :-(
Fantastic updates!! Oh good that the jelly bears have a permanent home now! I got lost on London Walk website, so excellent improvements and I love their humour (what we don't do). And the Harry Potter guide!
Great tips for my city. You've convinced me to visit the Cartoon museum & do at least one walk ;-) 'Ein shoona thag'
Hi Christine, du hast ein paar sehr schöne Tipps zusammengestellt und mich mit reichlich Inspiration versorgt, was ich mir in London noch anschauen könnte - z.B. das Cartoon-Museum. Danke für die tollen Tipps!
Excellent London travel page. Certainly bring back fond memories of our trip to London on several occasions. The city indeed has lots of attractions to offer to foreign tourists especially its museums. Thanks for the virtual tour. ~ho & pang
This sounds like a very cool tour! I may be in the minority not being a huge HP fan but I really like that it is not a "movie" tour. (We saw some cool HP props at Warner Brothers Studio Hollywood this year.)
Nice new tips Christine = I like to see the rarer side of London. The hotel prices were the only reason I didn't visit last summer!!
So glad that you managed to fing that rare breed of family run hotels! Would love to have seen the inside of the cartoon museum ;~)
Excellent introduction to London and new updatings since I read your page a year ago. I'd like to see the grave of Karl Marx too. Can't find time to make my own page. Too many VT-s have already done so many rated pages here! Thanks Christine for sharing!
