| The beach in one of the resorts |
Usedom is both the name of the second largest island of Germany and that of a town on this island. My tips here will be about the island and its two sides, very different from each other.
Usedom is said to enjoy the most hours of sunshine in Germany. In late 19th century it became a fashionable seaside resort for the aristocracy and the rich families from Berlin. Along the seaside there are fashionable , small towns with a very elaborate architecture, the so-called "Kaiserbäder" - Emperor's Resorts - , while further away there are small villages where time seems to have stopped. |
| | The Baltic Sea is to the East of Usedom, the Szczecin lagoon to the South and the water between the island and the mainland is called Achterwasser. While the typical beach life takes place in the resorts on the Baltic Sea, the best hiking trails are in the other parts of the island. In my mind this is the more interesting part, so many of the tips on my page are in the off the beaten path section. |
| | Usedom is a paradise for bird- watchers! Apart from the sea birds you can see the European sea eagle there. It is assumed that seven couples of them are breeding on the island. We saw a few of them, a highlight for any bird-watcher. There are also storks, ospreys and many, many others. |

jumpingnorman Wed Jul 29, 2009 06:16 UTC This is a big huge oak tree! I love trees but we do not have much here in Arizona..the Rocket Museum sounds like a place for me, and of course, the beach and the small villages...Norman :) | HORSCHECK Fri May 15, 2009 11:20 UTC Chrinstine, fantastic page with brilliant photos and outstanding commentaries. Very interesting to read. Unfortunately, I haven't been to Usedom yet, but only made it to Ruegen. Keep up the good work. | freddie18 Sat Dec 6, 2008 19:02 UTC agree with you Christine, i don't overlook the small villages although i am also into old building architecture. Am a coffee drinker. 106 types of coffee at Café am Deich is far too many. will be confused but i am visiting the place. thanks for sharing. | joiwatani Sat Dec 6, 2008 02:24 UTC Your tips on Usedom are great!
