Don't "Do" Venice - Enjoy it

by christine.j - last update: Apr 5, 2007

On the way to Torcello
Recently someone said in the Venice forum that Venice is not worth a visit, there is not much to see and you can "do" it in a few hours.
Of course, if someone "does" it in a few hours, maybe taking a few pictures of the Rialto bridge and a couple more of San Marco, then there's not that much to it.
But if you stay longer and especially if you are there early in the morning, when Venice is waking up and there are hardly any tourists, you won't "do" venice, but you'll enjoy it.
This time, in March 2007, we had another day of rain and storm and again I marvelled at the number of broken umbrellas we saw. The next day, however, we were rewarded by a great view, as far as the alps with the snow-covered mountains.
The part of Venice I enjoyed most were the islands of Burano and Torcello.
Of course, San Marco is absolutely beautiful, but the churches I likes the most were the smaller churches in the neigbourhoods, churches which were used for service and at the same time were full of art.
When I arrived in Venice in October 2005, it was Raining and Storming. (Yes, both words deserve a capital letter).I was walking to my hotel - luckily only 5 minutes away from the train station-, trying to balance an umbrella, carrying a bag and pulling my small case.As soon as I had checked in, I started walking through Venice in the rain. It was fun!
I've never seen so many umbrellas getting blown away,or getting twisted and turned. I suppose the small canals and alleys are the reason for the sudden winds, which were really hard on the umbrellas.
The next morning, it had cleared again and when I was walking through Venice again, I noticed lots and lots of broken umbrellas. Some were just thrown in a corner, others were used more creatively, as you can see in the picture.

Pros:"Venice in rain means less tourists, better walking"
Cons:"Venice in rain also means you get pretty wet."
In A Nutshell:"Don't let the weather stop you from enjoying this city!"

I have yet to see a bad view from a window in Venice. I agree with staying out of the way a little

I just get such a kick out of things like this - the statue w/umbrella - we are all much too serious most of the time!
