Bad Wimpfen - like a page out of the history book

by christine.j - last update: Nov 1, 2009

In winter, when it gets dark very early, you can get a good impression of how it must have been in former times, before the streets were lit very well. There are not too many lamps on the cobblestoned streets in Bad Wimpfen. When it is getting dark, you think you're back in the Middle Ages.
Quite scary, isn't he?

Don't worry, you won't meet the hangman there

BUT, when you go to Bad Wimpfen the last weekend of August, you will see him in the streets.
That's when a medieval market is held in the old town. You'll see old fashioned musicians, jugglers, medieval aristocracy , craftspeople ,...and the hangman. The market is great fun and it's amazing how much love to the detail the costumes of the participants show.
Bad Wimpfen is a small town with a beautiful medieval center, about 45 minutes from Heidelberg. It's very much off the beaten path. I think it's one of the few medieval towns in Germany where I heard only German spoken in the streets, no tourists at all. However the local dialect sometimes is harder to understand than English.
An exception to this is the time of the Christmas market, when busloads of tourist arrive for the famous market there.
Update summer 2008:
When walking up the hill the main street coming from the train station, look up and you can see this knight guarding the entrance to Bad Wimpfen.

In many guide books about Bad Wimpfen you can still read about the angel museum. The owner of this museum died and the family couldn't keep it open, so the museum doesn't exist any more.
It's a pity, this was a nice, small museum which showed lots about guardian angels in art.

Wonderful updates!! Pig museum ahh, and the markets! I seriously consider to book myself into Herberge zur Traube for one of the Christmas market weekends :-) Sad to hear that the angel museum is closed :-(
