Kantstrasse starts right at the Zoo train station, so we thought we could just walk up to the hotel. However, Kantstrasse is a very long street and the hotel is at the other end. So we had to walk for a while. It was interesting to see how the atmosphere of the street changed from block to block. I had never seen the difference so clearly before. The shops were run down, lots of paper lying around, dirty houses; then we crossed one side street and all of a sudden there were expensive shops, small bistros and everything was clean. It made walking to the hotel very interesting, especially as we kept wondering what the block of our hotel would look like.
The hotel turned out to be in Wilmersdorf, a nice part of Berlin. It's a Best Western,so by booking ahead you can get a good rate. I have no idea if anybody ever pays the rack rates, they're far too expensive.
We had a nice room in the non-smoker section of the hotel. Breakfast was buffet style, very good. It seems they haven't realized yet that many people like tea for breakfast, as they provide only a very limited number of tea pots. There is hot water and several kinds of tea, so that you can make your own tea. But when all tea pots are in the dishwasher, then there's no tea for breakfast. However, there was no shortage of juice, so I drank several glasses of orange juice.
