A very young, but quite big "Berliner"

The reason we went to Berlin in March 2010 was the Halfmarathon, but we managed to visit the Tierpark and watched the new-born elefant baby on his first outing. It was great fun to see how Mama elefant and all the elefant aunts looked out for him.

A green city

During our visit in Berlin in late spring 2009 the city certainly was very green, green and red on Saturday. It happened to be the weekend of the Cup Final of the German Football League, and the colours of the two teams were green and red respectively. The next day, Sunday, it was only green, easy to see which team had won.

Another green part of Berlin was this spot in the park close to the zoo, only a few minutes away from the busy street it was very quiet and peaceful.

I've heard many people say Berlin was more interesting when there used to be two Berlins.I don't think so. I've been to West Berlin and to East Berlin before the reunification, and I've been to Berlin several times since then. I think there were two big, interesting cities and now there is
one big, interesting city, with not just one city center, but lots of different areas to visit. Some look like a village with lots of green, others are mainly steel, concrete and glass.

Our visit in 2008was the first for a long time without any visitor to show Berlin to. So my husband and I skipped all the usual major sights and concentrated on lesser-known areas. This picture was taken in Spandau, I had a good view across the roofs of Berlin from the tower there. You can see how many green areas there are in this big city.

Some great shopping tips here, Christine. I'll be sure to search out the Ampelmaennchen shop and Fassbender & Rausch for souvenirs!

Excellent Berlin page with wonderful photographs. Berlin is in our list of cities to visit in Europe. The Holocaust Memorial, those churches in the city and the Citadel certainly look interesting to visit and explore. ~ho & pang

Its now hard to imagine the wall around Berlin. I liked your beggar tip. I could tell you a number of tales, involving the strokes pulled by so called beggars.

Ampelmännchen :-)) I just had to read all again together with your new ones :-)) Yes, this mosaic looks similar in style to the one here in the wedding tower :-) Oh and I would love to do a boat tour through the canals :-)

I agree there's so much to see in Berlin apart from the main attractions. I also love Hackesche Hofe and during my last stay in Berlin also visited Spandau ( which reminds me it's time to update my Berlin page.)

fascinating page - the green walking man, the packs of cards, fascinating city - but no tea for breakfast! That is on the nose.

Excellent page, Christine! I've been to Berlin many times and every time it impressed me with great changes. I missed it last 4 years and can only imagine how it has been changed now. Thanks for sharing!
