Newcastle was named after the Norman castle built in 1080 by William the Conqueror's son. Newcastle is a historic city, with a medieval cathedral, historic churches and remains of Hadrian's wall as well as many Georgian and Victorian buildings. I visit the Newcastle area several times a year as this is where my parents-in-law live, therefore my pages will be updated every so often. It is a lovely area, near the coast, near to the beautiful Lake District, 67 miles from the border of Scotland and has many places of interest. The photo above shows the Angel Of The North, a structure which symbolizes the 'Gateway to the North East'. Please look at my travel tip for information about it. For tips slightly further north of Newcastle, in Northumberland, please take a look at my Northumberland page |
| | April 2007 I finally got to have a proper explore of the Quayside area after 3½ years of visiting Newcastle! Here is a photo of the Tyne bridges, with the Gateshead Millenium bridge in the foreground and the Tyne, Swing and high level bridges in the background. Unfortunately the High level bridge was covered over for restoration during my visit. |

BruceDunning Wed Aug 5, 2009 23:51 UTC The angel really looks like it-he/she could fly away. Great job of presenting this town | MikeStarr5 Mon Oct 29, 2007 22:45 UTC Great pic - Thanks. Here in "Barking Town" we have the UK's 2nd largest public artwork called "Holding Pattern" - It's 70m long x 50m wide and almost 6m high. It cost £650,000 to build and only Anthony Gormley's “Angel of the North” is bigger. | budapest8 Tue Sep 4, 2007 03:12 UTC Aa'd a canny good gandie the pictures an it wez aal canny good . Wow, the Angel of the North is very impressive and I would love a chance to see Hadrian's Wall as well. One of these days, I will travel to the north of England! |
