1 day in Cairo

by clairegeordio - last update: Nov 14, 2006

We visited Cairo during our week's holiday in Cyprus.
We booked a tour there by plane through www.freetimetours.com, a travel agency in Paphos before our holiday began. First of all, this was not our first planned trip to Cairo, our first trip should have been in November 2004 when we had booked flights to come for the weekend during our 1 week stay in Luxor, however, as we had not known about needing to confirm our flights once there, we lost the seats, so this was a very important effort for us to finally get to Cairo!

The bus picked us up early from our hotel and we arrived in Cairo after approximately an hour's flight at 9am.
Our coach along with Egyptian guide took us to the Citadel and Mosque, Pyramids, a 5 star hotel to have a buffet lunch, a Papyrus institute and souvenir shop, the Egyptian museum and then to finish the day we had a sunset cruise on the Nile with entertainment and food. We got back to Paphos around 10.30pm. It was a good day, but as always, with a tour, you are limited with how much time you can stay in one place and have to maybe see some things that you don't particularly want to see eg we had already seen Papyrus being made and been souvenir shopping on our holiday to Luxor, so to spend 45 minutes here was a waste of time for us, but overall I was glad to have finally made it to the Pyramids! By no means do I feel that I have seen the real Cairo, but I have at least had a taster and seen some fantastic places there and although we did not have a whole weekend there, as originally planned, I felt like I had seen what I had come to see.

Yes to the tourist traps. Nothing like seeing the pyramids up close and personal huh?
