"Elegy for the City on the Straights" Detroit by pedersdottir

There was potential. From River Rouge to Hamtramck. Even the street names sound distinguished: Jefferson, Lafayette, Woodward -- ah, lovely Woodward.
But the city that grew up with the automobile industry was left behind when business moved away. The intervening years have been no kinder than 'the powers that be'.
Formerly glorious mansions fell into ruin. A handful -- the lucky ones -- were converted to other uses.
What remains is left to dream -- of what might have been.
All photos from the great snow of December 1974 taken by me. Pictures attributed to LAE were taken by my sister.
To a great degree MUST SEES are located Off the Beaten Track and thus: out of the city.
- Pros:Close to Canada; good roads out of town
- Cons:Conventional wisdom failed here
- In a nutshell:Poised to sink into oblivion

This old houses are ver yimpressive. Didn't know, that there is more to Detroit than cars and factories.
Detroit is an automobile city alright! Interesting tips that show a nice side of this town! Thanks for sharing, Katja!
Great information about Ford! I went to his winter home home in Florida last time I visited.
La Shish is really "to die for". I think their lamb has spoiled me for life.
Good pages, Katja. Loved Cranbrook House and Gardens. Thanks !
What amazes me about Detroit is that they have built what is essentially a new opera house at 1526 Broadway. I like your balanced account of this struggling city, and local hero Henry Ford.
I've been to Detroit half a dozen times, but still haven't seen most of the places in your tips. We've gotta get back up that way. Very informative and helpful tips. Unlike Pete, I didn't get "Ford Fairlane."
I get it, Katja. Ford FairLane. : ) Mo good information on Motown from one of the better VT posters. I enjoyed stopping by. And FWIW, my friend Kay (Haldane) is welcome to that putz Eminem. :^/ I'm getting old.
