You can take away my store, my clothes and all of my trinkets and jewelry. Just leave me my backpack, camera, and hiking shoes. Where there is freedom and a few extra dollars, there is travel!

The Ultimate Canadian Road Trip Survival Backpack:

- The Map. Duh.

- The Cell Phone. Great for emergencies and to phone your friends and brag, "You'll never believe what I just saw!"

- The Camera. The one time you leave it at home, you'll kick yourself. (See my Windsor tip for explanation)

- Several Pairs of Clean Underwear. Your mother really knew what she was talking about!

- Tunes! How else can you survive driving through the Prairie provinces without singing along to the old hit song, "Radar Love?"

- Tylenol or Advil. For when you get a headache after screaming along to 'Radar Love'.

- Tim Hortons Coffee Cup. It could be empty for all we care - show it to display you're really into our culture. It is a badge of honour.

- Immodium. Because you're never really sure how much longer your stomach can handle that Poutine you got in Quebec.

- Mosquito Repellant. We grow them extra large in Canada. Plus, three words: West Nile Virus.

- General Knowledge of our Super Heroes. Including Stompin' Tom Connors, Toronto Maple Leafs' Tie Domi, Musicians - The Barenaked Ladies and Eugene Levy (the dad in the American Pie series).
