Grand Circle cruise gave us one day in Cologne

Legendary Visitors

I appreciate the range of "truth" in religious stories. Ursula and her companions are said to have visited Cologne; hence the ancient St. Ursula church about half-mile north of the Dom. And inside the Dom, some say there are remains of the Three Wise Men. Cologne is also the site of frightful devastation in the 1940's. The City Museum provides an excellent display of its history.

Cruise ship dock

Our River Rhapsody (Grand Circle) docked along Konrad Adanauer Quay at the intersection of Machabaerstrasse, about five blocks north of the Hohenzollern railway bridge. The walk to the Dom is about 15 minutes, and the most direct route was through the street-level main railway station.

Excellent two-hour bus tour

Weary from the cobblestones of other cities, we headed directly for the 10 a.m. departure of a two hour city bus tour on a double-decker. Our bus was mostly Germans of our age, but the commentator at the microphone maintained a clear and informative message about the sites. Even her German could be understood by this beginner! We looped the old town several times, then did part of the ring road and headed to the east bank of the Rhein for a stop at the exposition grounds and a look back at the city and its Dom. An hour into the trip, we had a needed lavatory stop at the City Museum, entrance included in the bus ticket. And that museum was fascinating about Cologne's history. Back on the bus, we again moved through downtown neighborhoods. The guide pointed out a building used by the Gestapo for torture.

Pros:"Cologne's interest could last at least several days, and it might be a good city from which to make radial trips by train."
Cons:"It was jammed that September Saturday!"
In A Nutshell:"Let's go back to Cologne!"
