Vienna to Amsterdam on Grand Circle

Stephansdom
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 14-day trip on Grand Circle's River Rhapsody from Vienna to Amsterdam. Excellent, capable, gracious staff. Because I am interested in city geography and conveniences, I intend to emphasize the locations of the docks and how Grand Circle performed excellently. A traveler can go on this tour knowing nothing of city geography, as you are well taken care of, but I prefer to share what I learned. The brochure gave this address for the dock location: Handelskai Anlegestelle DDSG at KM 1929.09, that is Handels Quay (a rather long street along the bank of one of the Danube channels), the docking point of a local dayliner service, and near the Danube kilometer marker 1929. The dock is located outside the city center on the north side of the Reichs Bridge. Nearest U-Bahn: U-1, station Vorgartenstrasse (train with destination Kagran). This is a mere four subway stops from Stephansplatz (the Dom), but it would be a huge walk. After lunch, Grand Circle provided free shuttle buses to and from Schwedenplatz, near the city center.

Banks and internet

From the boat, follow the signs to the U-Bahn and you will also find the business district on Vorgartnerstrasse. There are three banks with ATM's. A bank with five initials (WATSG?) gave me an excellent rate but no receipt. (Upon return home, I learned that the rate was good.) Also, near the exit from the outbound U-bahn is a store with a Western Union sign which offered the internet, inexpensively.

Don't overlook Judenplatz

Do not overlook the memorials at Judenplatz, in the old city.
A few minibus routes roam the old city, and Routes 1 and 2 of the trams take 30 minutes to circle the old city.

Pros:"Excellent public transit, much of interest."
Cons:"A questionable history of 20th century authoritarian governments."
In A Nutshell:"After three brief stays in Vienna, I need a longer stay."
