One of my most memorable moments in Coimbra was an evening spent sipping on fine wine, sitting on a hill looking down on the beautiful city, while listening to wonderful Fado music. Fado de Coimbra differs from that of the typical Lisboa style because more commonly males sing, and the instrumentalists are often showcased with intricate solos. The songs are less depressing and are of more lighthearted themes such as love, friendship and nostalgia.
I visited Coimbra at quite possibly the most boring time of year. Coimbra is a University town, and I mean that. The town nearly shuts down during school breaks, and the streets are empty. If you're looking for solitude you may enjoy Coimbra in August, but the city lacks all of the charm that the students draw in. Don't be surprised if you're wandering the streets on a Saturday night in August wondering why you haven't encountered any other people.
