Salt Island was inhabited to take advantage of the natural salt ponds, an important resource for the British Royal Navy. The island is most famous because the RMS Rhone is wrecked off the coast. The Rhone sank in 1867 during a hurricane.
Today this is one of the most famous wreck diving sites in the world. The boat split in two, and the debris is anywhere between 20-80 feet in depth.
I've added a travelogue on preparing to dive the wreck, and once I get a chance to scan in my photos I'll add the underwater shots. |
