not so bad - give it a chance

mts surrounding the city

My first taste of Central America was arriving at the airport in San José. Although I had never placed foot here before, I had been accustomed to the ways of developing countries. So San José was exactly as I had expected; sweltering hot, muggy, dirty, congested, and loud. I took a taxi from the airport into town, thinking I may stay there overnight, but as soon as I arrived I decided to directly jump on a bus and head out to the mountains.

I returned to San José 17 days later and was pleasantly surprised. At this point I had gotten accustomed to the heat, dirt, mugginess, and other factors one would expect. So it was surprising to compare how I had first viewed SJ and how I now looked at it. Sure, there was still ridiculous traffic. I was surprised that it was not as hot as it first seemed, especially after spending time in the furnace called the Caribbean Coast. If you take a moment to look up and away from the grime in the streets, you’ll notice the beautiful mountains surrounding the city. You can even hear birds chirping in the trees amidst the drone of the motors.

I only spent a couple nights here, mainly doing last-minute shopping before returning home. There are plenty of beautiful sights within the city, but I only managed to see a few. Honestly, sights are not that important to me. It’s more about the food, the culture, and the interaction with people. I’d rather sit in a park for an hour than spend it in a museum. So that’s exactly what I did.
